I recently saw at the Somerset Records Office the 1846 plans for the proposed Bristol & Poole Harbour Railway which would have been a combination of the North Somerset and the S&D on a slightly different line - and a gradient of 1 in 45 over the Mendips! If it had been built it would have saved the messy layout at Radstock by creating a through route. The plans are well worth a look if you're ever at the SRO.
