Suggested by Nick Howes - views from our southern members particularly welcome!
Suggest a rebuilt Spetisbury to be your southern starting point. If you could then re-bridge Louse Lane, you have the best kept length “70mph racing straight” with shared cyclepath and single line from Moorcourt Farm to Blandford St Mary.

The question is, would you be allowed to run a train at 70mph on this stretch by HM Rail Inspectorate, especially if the cycle path is so close?
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we'll need 70mph in the future anyway. Mind you on the open road - say a dual carriageway - cars and lorries are allowed to pass bikes on the same stretch of road at 70 mph. With the trains on a fixed track and a fence separating the two modes I can't see a problem. I don't imagine a fully restored S&D would be operating under a light railway order, so speeds should be reasonably high throughout. Optimum efficient use of fuel would probably be the principal determinant of speed ...
