Welcome to the 'New Somerset and Dorset Railway'

The original Somerset and Dorset Railway closed very controversially in 1966. It is time that decision, made in a very different world, was reversed. We now have many councillors, MPs, businesses and individuals living along the line supporting us. Even the Ministry of Transport supports our general aim. The New S&D was formed in 2009 with the aim of rebuilding as much of the route as possible, at the very least the main line from Bath (Britain's only World Heritage City) to Bournemouth (our premier seaside resort); as well as the branches to Wells, Glastonbury and Wimborne. We will achieve this through a mix of lobbying, trackbed purchase and restoration of sections of the route as they become economically viable. With Climate Change, road congestion, capacity constraints on the railways and now Peak Oil firmly on the agenda we are pushing against an open door. We already own Midford just south of Bath, and are restoring Spetisbury under license from DCC, but this is just the start. There are other established groups restoring stations and line at Midsomer Norton and Shillingstone, and the fabulous narrow gauge line near Templevcombe, the Gartell Railway.

There are now FIVE sites being actively restored on the S&D and this blog will follow what goes on at all of them!
Midford - Midsomer Norton - Gartell - Shillingstone - Spetisbury

Our Aim:

Our aim is to use a mix of lobbying, strategic track-bed purchase, fundraising and encouragement and support of groups already preserving sections of the route, as well as working with local and national government, local people, countryside groups and railway enthusiasts (of all types!) To restore sections of the route as they become viable.
Whilst the New S&D will primarily be a modern passenger and freight railway offering state of the art trains and services, we will also restore the infrastructure to the highest standards and encourage steam working and steam specials over all sections of the route, as well as work very closely with existing heritage lines established on the route.

This blog contains my personal views. Anything said here does not necessarily represent the aims or views of any of the groups currently restoring, preserving or operating trains over the Somerset and Dorset Railway!

right lines 4

The New S&D has long held the ambition of creating a quality magazine and this is now just about to happen! Phil Marsh and Grant Henderson have formed an editorial team and the first 'real' Right Lines, number 4, will be ready in a week or so. All members will of course receive a free copy, non-members will be able to purchase it via post and Internet, it will also be available at Midford and Spetisbury on working days. Cover price is £2.

The plan is to issue two magazines each year at first, hopefully building to a quarterly in time.

Charlton Marshall is south of Blandford and closed in 1956, but even today is still remarkably well preserved - in fact the station site features on the front page of our brochure.

Once Spetisbury is up and running this may well be the next location in the area that we head for. Despite its early closure the station will reopen with the line when opened throughout from Blandford as part of the phase one restoration of the whole route.

welcome aboard!

A big welcome to three new members of the New S&D team. Anna-Jayne Metcalfe and Simon Ellison have both joined the committee and will bring considerable skills to the team. Andy Thompson is now ploughing through our IT infrastructure, and a few other things, hopefully with the end result of making our New S&D presence as high profile and rewarding as his Steamtube and related sites!

We are still less than a year old and have made enormous progress in that time, but as I made clear at Saturday's meeting this is only the very very beginning of a long term and amazing project that will set the railway heritage, professional railway, tourism and sustainable industry 'communities' alight.

a big step (at last)

I've finally got round to ordering our promotional leaflet, which should be ready within two weeks. It's based on the already available home printed one, but will be a hundred times better! Obviously if you need some at your own railway please send for some.

Despite appearances this is actually a 2005 shot and a lighter version is used for the watermark background on the text side of the new leaflet. This was of course the Midsomer Norton Jinty impersonating the Bath-Binegar local ...

Also on order are mousemats with the main leaflet picture (Charlton Marshall). These should be available just in time for Christmas, and will be available through the e-commerce site.

job opportunity!

One thing the New S&D needs to do is create a register of land ownership for our entire route, making keeping an eye on developments and purchasing trackbed much easier. If there is anyone out there who would like to take on this challenge please let us know! This would become a committee post.

charlton marshall

Four shots of this remarkably well preserved minor station south of Blandford. This section is currently a trailway and seemed quite well used even on a cold and dark day in February.

It again shows just how easy restoration of large sections of the route will be. This part of the route did of course last almost three years longer than the rest, carrying freight to Blandford.

progress

I've just started the process of setting up a bank account for the New Somerset and Dorset - hopefully Paypal buttons will be up and running for membership, donations and items from our on-line shop within a week or so. We already have £50 worth of stamp payments to go in!

stour valley reflections

Shillingstone.

Near Stourpaine.

Blandford.

Spetisbury.

Still recovering from yesterday's epic trackbed survey down south.

I went along with Mick Knox, who did all the driving. We stopped at Shillingstone first, then headed towards Blandford. We found original S&D track still in place in Blandford. We also got to Charlton Marshall, Spetisbury and Stourpaine and Durweston halts, and ended up at the bridge just north of Sturminster Newton.

I'll be doing location by location reports over the next week or so!
