Welcome to the 'New Somerset and Dorset Railway'

The original Somerset and Dorset Railway closed very controversially in 1966. It is time that decision, made in a very different world, was reversed. We now have many councillors, MPs, businesses and individuals living along the line supporting us. Even the Ministry of Transport supports our general aim. The New S&D was formed in 2009 with the aim of rebuilding as much of the route as possible, at the very least the main line from Bath (Britain's only World Heritage City) to Bournemouth (our premier seaside resort); as well as the branches to Wells, Glastonbury and Wimborne. We will achieve this through a mix of lobbying, trackbed purchase and restoration of sections of the route as they become economically viable. With Climate Change, road congestion, capacity constraints on the railways and now Peak Oil firmly on the agenda we are pushing against an open door. We already own Midford just south of Bath, and are restoring Spetisbury under license from DCC, but this is just the start. There are other established groups restoring stations and line at Midsomer Norton and Shillingstone, and the fabulous narrow gauge line near Templevcombe, the Gartell Railway.

There are now FIVE sites being actively restored on the S&D and this blog will follow what goes on at all of them!
Midford - Midsomer Norton - Gartell - Shillingstone - Spetisbury

Our Aim:

Our aim is to use a mix of lobbying, strategic track-bed purchase, fundraising and encouragement and support of groups already preserving sections of the route, as well as working with local and national government, local people, countryside groups and railway enthusiasts (of all types!) To restore sections of the route as they become viable.
Whilst the New S&D will primarily be a modern passenger and freight railway offering state of the art trains and services, we will also restore the infrastructure to the highest standards and encourage steam working and steam specials over all sections of the route, as well as work very closely with existing heritage lines established on the route.

This blog contains my personal views. Anything said here does not necessarily represent the aims or views of any of the groups currently restoring, preserving or operating trains over the Somerset and Dorset Railway!

more track laid!

There's some great work going on down at the Gartell Railway with track now beginning to head towards Templecombe. The Gartell blog is an excellent source of information and this link will give lots more specific details of the work going on there.

There is also now a Gartell Facebook group.

It's great to see that the Gartell is giving the two established S&D standard gauge groups a run for their money!

off the s&d

If you're at a loose end or bored with S&D news (as if!) why not take a look on two of my other blogs, The Rail Thing which can cover just about anything rail-based and my new blog, Time Travelling which may, through its non-rail content, give you a bit more idea of what I'm about, as it delves randomly into my past covering everything from railways (of course), music, TV, popular culture, gangs of Sussex, travels around the world and absolutely NO Peak Oil!!

sentinel star

Okay, so she's skulking in the shadows at the back of this picture, but Midsomer Norton's Sentinel steam loco is very much the star of this blog!

I'm pleased to say I had a share in this historic and very unusual loco until it was bought out a year or so ago by a team who felt they could put far more effort into restoring it. The blog shows progress in detail and is a fascinating record of the work involved in getting a loco back up and running.

tracks and tracks - for relief from the S&D!

I've just revived my music and railway site tracks and tracks, really to give a place to put all my non-S&D photos and stories from 1971 onwards! Expect lots of eclecticism and some really surprising shots ...

gartell again

(Photos courtesy Mike Lucas)

Five lovely Gartell shots that really capture the atmosphere of this S&D narrow gauge line.

All show steam loco no 6 pulling the Prussian blue set.

Check out the Gartell blog - the S&D must be the only route in the UK with two blogs dedicated to it!

another joint line

(22.10.1986)

I imagine you'll be hard-pressed to identify the location of the above surviving (in 1986!) part of another UK joint line.

It may just be familiar to our Chair and Secretary!

Just to prove that I think there's more to railways than just the S&D take a look at one of my more esoteric blogsites (which will also reveal the location of this shot!) at European Byways.

that threat again ...

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is yet another line that has to consider the vague ‘threat’ of reinstatement as part of the network in the future. This may be something we will have to face at the S&D in about twenty years time, but I’m sure by then multi-use lines will be commonplace and there’ll be no real problems. Look at the Rail Revival site for more information.
