Welcome to the 'New Somerset and Dorset Railway'

The original Somerset and Dorset Railway closed very controversially in 1966. It is time that decision, made in a very different world, was reversed. We now have many councillors, MPs, businesses and individuals living along the line supporting us. Even the Ministry of Transport supports our general aim. The New S&D was formed in 2009 with the aim of rebuilding as much of the route as possible, at the very least the main line from Bath (Britain's only World Heritage City) to Bournemouth (our premier seaside resort); as well as the branches to Wells, Glastonbury and Wimborne. We will achieve this through a mix of lobbying, trackbed purchase and restoration of sections of the route as they become economically viable. With Climate Change, road congestion, capacity constraints on the railways and now Peak Oil firmly on the agenda we are pushing against an open door. We already own Midford just south of Bath, and are restoring Spetisbury under license from DCC, but this is just the start. There are other established groups restoring stations and line at Midsomer Norton and Shillingstone, and the fabulous narrow gauge line near Templevcombe, the Gartell Railway.

There are now FIVE sites being actively restored on the S&D and this blog will follow what goes on at all of them!
Midford - Midsomer Norton - Gartell - Shillingstone - Spetisbury

Our Aim:

Our aim is to use a mix of lobbying, strategic track-bed purchase, fundraising and encouragement and support of groups already preserving sections of the route, as well as working with local and national government, local people, countryside groups and railway enthusiasts (of all types!) To restore sections of the route as they become viable.
Whilst the New S&D will primarily be a modern passenger and freight railway offering state of the art trains and services, we will also restore the infrastructure to the highest standards and encourage steam working and steam specials over all sections of the route, as well as work very closely with existing heritage lines established on the route.

This blog contains my personal views. Anything said here does not necessarily represent the aims or views of any of the groups currently restoring, preserving or operating trains over the Somerset and Dorset Railway!

Right Lines 6

Right Lines 6 has now arrived (bigger than ever!) and we are now in the process of sending them out to all members. It may take a week or so to get them all out so don't worry if they are not with you immediately!

We were going to send out the new membership cards with the magazine run but it will be easier to get all the magazines out and then deal with the membership cards, which number about 50, most of which are for members who took advantage of the discounted three year offer.

You'll also find details of how to donate to the MIDFORD REBUILDING APPEAL!

June 2014 Right Lines

New S&D members have been waiting with bated breath for the latest issue of the members' magazine RIGHT LINES. This edition (June 2014) will have 4 more pages than before as there was so much content! As well as all the usual material there is a feature on walking the line and also details of the Midford Appeal, to rebuild this iconic station, which we own.

If you're not already a member why not join the New S&D? Membership allows to you to work (fully insured) at Midford and Spetisbury, gets you a 10% discount on sales items and you also receive two quality magazines each year, bringing you news from all along our famous line.

Early Christmas present

Winging its way to all New S&D members worldwide is our latest magazine, Right Lines. Most of you will also be receiving a form for the three year reduced membership offer, plus a standing order form, so you can still take advantage of the old membership rate until 31st December this year, after which the new rate will be the only one available.

I have been sending a few of these out at a time so you may already have your copy! However it was clear I needed to blitz the backlog, so I've just sacrificed a whole day to get the rest of them out! These will hopefully get posted tonight!

If you have been considering joining the New S&D the next seven weeks is the time to do so as we are holding our membership price to just £5 per year (hopelessly uneconomic nowadays with insurance at two sites, the mortgage on Midford plus production costs of 2 annual printed magazines!) until 31st December, after that the basic membership fee rises to £15 per year. Life membership has been held at just £250, an absolute bargain, especially for our younger followers! It also helps admin enormously this end!

So why not treat yourself or a friend to a membership this Christmas?

missive from dorset

Recently received is issue 5 of Platform, the excellent magazine of the Shillingstone Railway Project. There are features on the Great Dorset Steam Fair (which was of course inspired by the S&D), bios of the new management team, a piece on Cunarder, a look at Shillingstone's celebration of the Last Pines and even a piece of fiction.

Cover price is £1 and the magazine is available from the group.

There are now FOUR quality magazines featuring the S&D, led by the superb 'Telegraph' from Midsomer Norton, followed by the Washford group's long-running Bulletin and of course the Shillingstone Platform, all being breathlessly chased by the New S&D's recently launched 'Right Lines'. It's amazing that there is still so much to report on this extraordinary line, but with activity at 5 sites along the route perhaps we shouldn't be that surprised!

right lines 4

The New S&D has long held the ambition of creating a quality magazine and this is now just about to happen! Phil Marsh and Grant Henderson have formed an editorial team and the first 'real' Right Lines, number 4, will be ready in a week or so. All members will of course receive a free copy, non-members will be able to purchase it via post and Internet, it will also be available at Midford and Spetisbury on working days. Cover price is £2.

The plan is to issue two magazines each year at first, hopefully building to a quarterly in time.

New S&D chairman's report

This will be appearing in the New S&D's magazine, 'RIGHT LINES', in a few weeks' time. Hopefully it boils down the last six months activity and I haven't missed anything!

Chairman's Report

June 2012

It's fantastic that Philip Marsh and Grant Henderson have formed an editorial team to produce a magazine twice a year. I was well aware that members living a distance from the line were not really getting value for money for their membership fee, but until people stepped forward we were rather stuck! Can I ask all of you to try to provide articles and letters, and send in photos for the next edition.

Another relatively new member, Dean Cockwell, has worked wonders down at Spetisbury, negotiating with Dorset County Council and getting a team together to restore the station.

Up at Midford Tom and Stuart Seale have done sterling work rescuing this most iconic station from the undergrowth - work on rebuilding the station is now not too far away. Other members (even myself!) have helped as well, but 95% of the work has been done by the Seales.

Both Spetisbury and Midford will be rebuilt to serve as information offices for the whole line and will also have shops to make each site self-financing.

We have also approached Network Rail Property to see if Templecombe box will become available for lease at some time in the future. Whilst the site is currently still within NR's Operational area, it may well switch to Commercial at some time in the future, at which point we could negotiate to take on this site with a similar role to that of Spetisbury and Midford but with the added attraction of a Network line running past the front door.

The branches meanwhile are still in deep sleep, despite the potential of Wells, Glastonbury, Burnham and the Glastonbury Festival sites all being on route. If any of you would like to get something started on the branches please let us know! We are here to help local initiatives get started.

We've had an influx of new officers join the committee, some with fixed roles and others as general members. Thank you all for agreeing to get involved at this level!

Elsewhere on the S&D all three established sites - Midsomer Norton, Shillingstone and Gartell - have recently laid extra track, and now Midsomer Norton has joined Gartell in running regular passenger trains. Midsomer Norton is an absolute gem and a credit to all of those who have helped make this happen.

On the Sunday before the Jubilee holiday, ALL five S&D sites had work being done on them, running trains, rebuilding etc. What a turn around from the dark 80s and 90s when hardly anything was happening! The S&D was a line destined to live forever, or as close as possible, and the closure was stupid. But back in the 60s people had other priorities and a very different view of the future, expecting to be getting around in flying cars or jet packs, eating space paste from tubes!

The last five to ten years have seen some amazing developments in the railway field, from huge passenger loadings on the Network, through the building of Tornado, the rebuilding of the Welsh Highland Railway and the incredible sight (in Porthmadog) of regular steam passenger trains running through the streets.

Many lines that missed the first and second waves of preservation now have groups determined to rebuild them. The Glyn Valley Tramway in Wales for example, the Helston branch and the missing link between Bodiam and Robertsbridge - did even the most optimistic of us really think these things would happen? And in 2014 a good proportion of the Waverley line will be reopened, a reinstatement that required the demolition of many homes built on the trackbed since closure.

This is the background in which we need to set the S&D revival. The world is changing, the oil is running out and we've all seen the effects of climate change over the past few years. Meanwhile the roads continue to deteriorate and many people are giving up their cars. And this is before the cost of fuel even begins to really impact on most of us.

In 20 years the railway map of Britain will be much expanded, the S&D will be well on the road to complete reopening, there will be new build routes opening up as well as many of the Beeching cuts reversed. We do blend heritage and 'real' running, but all lines will eventually if they are to survive. It won't be easy by any means, and there will be upsets and hold ups on the way, but remember that it will get easier as each day passes!

right lines - makeover and take off!

Yes! Great strides on media over the last few days! Not only do we now have a Magazine Editor (Phil Marsh) but new member Grant Henderson will also be helping out. We also now have a Press Officer, Debra Sainsbury, who will be communicating to the local, regional, railway and green media, greatly raising the profile of the New S&D.

This is something we've held back on because we felt that we needed some sort of presence before blitzing the media and pulling in far more members locally. The hope is that every forward-thinking resident along the route gets actively involved in getting their railway back. It may be a struggle at first because much of the media is backwards-looking, leftward-leaning, silver spacesuited and hardly aware of climate change, let alone Peak Oil, but we'll soon change that!

As for Right Lines, this has really not happened as much as it should, and ideally will become at least a twice a year quality publication with fixed publishing dates (June and December?), covering the restoration, the original route, heritage aspects, economics, the local area and giving a focus for all the behind the scenes work as well as the restoration work. It will also add value to membership for members outside the area, and our overseas members, being kept up to date with all the big events and action now happening around the S&D.

Things are happening very quickly and it may be that Right Lines may well become a thrice yearly or even quarterly publication in time.

S&D telegraph no 39

Midsomer Norton's excellent Telegraph (no 39) has just arrived. It's to the usual very high standard and shows their new DMU on the cover. This is always an excellent read and doesn't have pages of adverts to reduce the content!

Sad news is that Julian Jefferson is stepping down as editor. It's Julian's design skills that have really given the Telegraph its classy image, as well as his excellent photos. Hopefully he'll still be submitting! I first met Julian on a sponsored S&D walk many years ago starting at Combe Down and ending at Midford, before walking back to the start point. He's always been very hands on (working with the Sunday gang for example) as well as creative.

There is of course still a vacancy at the New S&D for a magazine editor! We need somenoe who can bring a 24 page magazine together twice a year, mainly so that distant members (and we do have members all over the world) get something for their membership fee. You'll  have a real opportunity to influence the look and feel of the New S&D. You'll get loads of support from the existing management team, as well as plenty of copy from me!

If you are interested (and this does include you Julian!) please email leysiner@aol.com

telegraph!

Just arrived is the latest edition of the superb S&D Telegraph from the Trust at Midsomer Norton. This gets better with every issue, the wrap around front cover is brilliant and makes me want to throttle Julian next time I see him! I'm even starting to get into the historical operations material!

This reminds me that the New S&D need an EDITOR for its magazine, Right Lines. Please email if you'd like to take this role on. You'll get loads of financial and physical support (articles, pics etc) and you'll be playing a valuable role in promoting the S&D.

the last post

(All pictures copyright Dave Clark)

This will be my last post on here for about 16 days as I'm leaving for Cuba tomorrow. Dave Clark's pointed me in the direction of loads of his excellent Shillingstone pictures and I'll return to these when I get back.

An apology if you were expecting Right Lines 3. Unfortunately the problem with formatting hasn't yet been resolved and I've run out of time now to get it sorted before I go away. I will prioritise this when I get back -it does rather highlight the need for an editor to take over this fun job sooner rather than later. Again, if you're a member and interested in taking this on please email me at leysiner@aol.com

No doubt I'll return fully refreshed after Cuba, with planning of the AGM the other priority. Much more when I get back!

and about time ...

(Pensford (Bristol route) 30.4.2011 © Steve Sainsbury)

I've finally managed to complete RIGHT LINES 3 and hopefully all members will get their copies over the next week or so. There is an appeal for an editor in the magazine - if you are a member and would like to take on this job, with lots of financial support from the New S&D and plenty of content from myself and others, please email me on leysiner@aol.com

progress ...

Been busy all day getting Right Lines 3 ready - hopefully the first ones will be going out on Monday to new members. All members should have a copy by this time next week.

This will be a six pager, and should be the last in-house production. Surely one of you has the time and skills to take on the editor role for this? There's plentty of financial resources that you'll have available, plus I'm happy to support you through the first 2 or 3 editions at least. This is such an important role and an excellent way of stamping your mark and style on the S&D revival. It's taken me 15 months to get this one out - mainly because I have so many other S&D things on my plate.

Please email me at leysiner@aol.com if interested.

at last!

I've finally started on RIGHT LINES 3, now branded (for obvious reasons!) the occasional magazine of the New S&D.

We're still looking for somebody to take on the editor position to give the magazine the justice it deserves. Ideally we'd like to produce 3 to 4 issues a year. The financial resources are here - enough to produce a decent glossy type mag.

I'm more than happy to continue to provide copy and also proof read future issues but with about 4 or 5 other major roles in the New S&D this really needs to be somebody's exclusive baby.

Please email me at leysiner@aol.com if interested!

lazy spell ...

I know - it's been very quiet on here the last week or so! The main reason is that we are off on a two week holiday this Friday, with a week in the Caribbean and a week in Florida. Consequently I've been really busy getting everything done at work, and I've not even been able to get up to Midford for three weeks ...

Also losing two cats (both 19) and getting two new kittens has left us both upset and very busy!

I have today managed to get the new membership cards done (currently for new members and renewals) and those of you who have been waiting for a few weeks for your welcome pack won't have to wait very much longer!

I'm starting to look towards 2011 now ... which should see the actual rebuilding of Midford begin, restoration of Spetisbury take off, the new 1000% better Right Lines launched and that big press push I've promised for months. The first AGM of the New S&D should also take place in around March.

our first tiny step

This picture shows the extent of the land now owned by the New S&D. Everything within the red line is ours and is now set aside - for ever - for the use of the railway. As well as the platform and trackbed to the Long Arch Bridge we also own woodland on either side of the railway. We even own a tiny piece of the old canal!

Although a forward looking organisation we are also very aware of the huge historical significance of the S&D and ownership has led to us inheriting a lot of old paperwork going back over 100 years. I'll put this on this site over the next few months, and use this as the basis for an article in the 'past' section of Right Lines 3.

Over the next few weeks I want to put together a 'Midford Team' that will clear and rebuild the station area. This set up will be copied all along the route as we buy more and more parcels of land.

step upwards

I've just finished packing and posting all the copies of Right Lines 2 - some of you will also be receiving your membership cards and renewals.

This will be the last self produced Right Lines. Right Lines 3 will be an A4 glossy magazine, in three sections - past, present and future. To fill the 24 or more pages we welcome articles and pictures that can fall into any of the above three sections. Articles on the S&D and the wider rail revival are welcome, similarly pictures can be of the S&D, of S&D locomotives and stock on the S&D or elsewhere, or of similar rail/tram revival projects elsewhere, anywhere in the world.

Prospective issue date will be January 2011.

If any of you would like to take on the role of editor of what will become a very prestigious magazine please contact me at leysiner@aol.com telling me why you think you should have the job!

perspective - and a new threat

I didn't even realise 'anti-car' books existed. I certainly never expected to read one!

But I have just finished the above. Now, to me, being 'anti-car' is a total waste of energy. The end of the car is now probably less than three decades off, so there's really no reason to waste a minute of one's time trying to hasten the inevitable.

But like most books it did give out some information that I'd never even thought about before. It covers the actual damage and change to our urban, suburban and rural landscape that the car has brought about. Not only the need for roads, but for parking spaces both at home and at work, as well as the destruction of 'real' town centres as out of town shopping areas, really only accessible to cars, became commonplace.

I've never been the slightest bit anti-car, and the book hasn't changed that at all. I'll still enjoy driving for as long as I can. But like most people I realise that the car (and the lorry and bus) are living on borrowed time. The usual refrain that the petrol and diesel-powered car will simply be replaced by LPG, electric and biofuel powered vehicles doesn't make sense as these alternatives will never be anywhere near as commonplace, and nowhere near as cheap, as oil. They are a sop to the simple man in the street, still worried about 'climate change' or 'the environment', rather than the real big issue of Peak Oil.

In reality the cost of running a car, which has been falling for decades, will soon begin to rise inexorably. No one disputes that oil is running out - it is a finite resource after all. The actual timing of the peak is still in doubt, it may have been several years ago, it may be as much as ten years into the future. It will only be clear with hindsight. Once the peak is reached the cost of oil, and all oil-derived products, will start to rise, slowly at first, but at an ever increasing pace.

The outcome is inevitable. As cars become more expensive to run less and less of us will be able to afford to run one. More of us will need to localise our lives and use public transport where available. The tax take from cars will start to fall, less money will be available to repair roads. There'll be a vicious circle of less cars, less money for roads, worse roads, less incentive to drive, more expense etc. I think when the end of the car comes it will all be over very quickly. And there's the threat. Will we be able to build the railways and tramways we need quickly enough? Will the skills, money, material and energy be available?
We can't worry about the wider picture though we obviously need to be aware of it. We can only concentrate on our small part of it. It is so important to get everything in place NOW so that we are prepared and ready to act when the decline comes. If in the meantime we can buy up trackbed, stations etc, and operate some sections of the route then all the better. What we are doing is so incredibly important, it's impossible to overstress our case.
There will be big news about the S&D over the next few months with the purchase and restoration of Midford, hopefully the restoration of Spetisbury, the launch of our new glossy Right Lines and a big media push. As always I'd like anyone who would like to take a more active role in what we're doing to contact me at leysiner@aol.com
