Welcome to the 'New Somerset and Dorset Railway'

The original Somerset and Dorset Railway closed very controversially in 1966. It is time that decision, made in a very different world, was reversed. We now have many councillors, MPs, businesses and individuals living along the line supporting us. Even the Ministry of Transport supports our general aim. The New S&D was formed in 2009 with the aim of rebuilding as much of the route as possible, at the very least the main line from Bath (Britain's only World Heritage City) to Bournemouth (our premier seaside resort); as well as the branches to Wells, Glastonbury and Wimborne. We will achieve this through a mix of lobbying, trackbed purchase and restoration of sections of the route as they become economically viable. With Climate Change, road congestion, capacity constraints on the railways and now Peak Oil firmly on the agenda we are pushing against an open door. We already own Midford just south of Bath, and are restoring Spetisbury under license from DCC, but this is just the start. There are other established groups restoring stations and line at Midsomer Norton and Shillingstone, and the fabulous narrow gauge line near Templevcombe, the Gartell Railway.

There are now FIVE sites being actively restored on the S&D and this blog will follow what goes on at all of them!

Our Aim:

Our aim is to use a mix of lobbying, strategic track-bed purchase, fundraising and encouragement and support of groups already preserving sections of the route, as well as working with local and national government, local people, countryside groups and railway enthusiasts (of all types!) To restore sections of the route as they become viable.
Whilst the New S&D will primarily be a modern passenger and freight railway offering state of the art trains and services, we will also restore the infrastructure to the highest standards and encourage steam working and steam specials over all sections of the route, as well as work very closely with existing heritage lines established on the route.

This blog contains my personal views. Anything said here does not necessarily represent the aims or views of any of the groups currently restoring, preserving or operating trains over the Somerset and Dorset Railway!

take care when commenting


I've always had a policy of no personal attacks both in articles and comments. I've just had two comments, the second one in particular which made some valid (but easily answerable and previously answered) points, but couldn't post them as they both contained personal attacks on a previous poster.

I've no idea why anyone would resort to this, we are all working towards the same thing.

I am unable to edit comments so if a comment does include a personal (or indeed general) attack or insult it HAS to be rejected. You are wasting your  time if you send a comment but also feel the need to attack a person, people or an organisation, the comment will not be seen by anybody.

It is also a courtesy to at least use a nickname or first name when posting comments, so other posters get to know you. Whilst I will of course permit anomynous posts (not all of us have Google identities) I think that what we are doing is so important and historic that we really should ALL identify ourselves when commenting, even if just for the historical record!

the s&d brand


This is the fantastic model of Blandford station which graces the cover of this month's Railway Modeller. The S&D seems to be going from strength to strength lately, it's everywhere! No other line comes close to the S&D for popularity.

I think much of the reason is that it is coming back, and more and more people are realising that that now means the WHOLE route and not just tiny - magnificent as they are - portions of it. It's amazing to think that 20 years ago not an inch of track remained in place on the route, and there were still many people that thought it would NEVER return.

We've seen a surge in membership in the New S&D over recent months, despite keeping ourselves pretty low key. Yesterday we had 419 hits on this blogsite! 2011 will see that big push that we've promised for some months. Hopefully we'll have solid news on Spetisbury soon which will mean that the S&D will be being revived at FIVE sites (6 including the private restoration at Masbury) on the route. Hopefully the groups will work more and more closely together in time. It would be nice for example to have joint meetings of all the groups (plus Washford) so we can co-ordinate the restoration and to share information. As I've often said this is a fantastic time to be involved with the most important rail restoration project in Europe!

A big thanks to Shillingstone for running an ad for the New S&D on the front page of their website (in the form of a disclaimer). Result was a big increase in our already high hit rate on the blog (and presumably on the website too). 210 visits yesterday!

It looks like this blog is by far and away the most popular port of call for those wishing to find out about our wonderful route. How the anti-S&D mob must be seething!

DISCLAIMER : We have no links with the New Somerset and Dorset Railway, and never have done.
We are NOT involved with them in ANY way.

We are also NOT involved with the
Midsomer Norton group, Gartell Railway, Washford or any other groups or
individuals, living, dead or undead.

But what we ARE involved with is our beloved SOMERSET AND DORSET RAILWAY. This blog has, does and always will support each and every venture, big or small, that exists to bring back this important transport link. It is true that I am Chairman of the New S&D; I have been Finance Director of the SDRHT, I am a life member of the SDRHT and a member of the NDRT. I also love animals, skiing, swimming and visiting other countries.

This is a BLOG, not a mission statement. It exists to inform and entertain. If you love the S&D then please read it, if you don't love the S&D why are you even bothering - you will NOT understand what we are about!

The New S&D (in my view) is NOT an 'environmental' group - if the idiots that have tarred us with that brush actually knew what they were talking about they would know that Peak Oil types and environmentalists DETEST each other! The New S&D (in my view) does not exist to bring people's dreams to life. It exists to bring back the S&D as a freight and passenger line that makes a profit. That time is not now, but it is probably a LOT closer than most of us think. We will proceed (in my view) in a cold and unsentimental manner and acquire land and property to make this easier. We will also pester national, regional and local politicians to make sure that OUR line is the top of the queue when rail reinstatement starts in earnest. We will also (in my view) do all we can to retain the atmosphere, infrastructure and culture of the OLD S&D, where it does not conflict with wider economic requirements. And we will (in ALL our views) do everything we can to accomodate current and future heritage groups that already have a toehold on the route, and continue to recommend joining those groups to anyone who wants to get their hands dirty rebuilding railways and driving steam and diesel locomotives.

Now, can I make it any clearer????

psychology, agenda and ownership





Nick Howes pointed me in the direction of an S&D forum today with the email header !!!!!!!

It soon became obvious what his point was!

One post read - (this was regarding this blog!)

MMmmm, the juries out on this one.I have an uneasy discontent with the underlying politics in the blog.But the wishful dreaming is harmless.

LOL! I have no idea what the 'underlying politics' are on this blog. If anybody or any group are radically non-political it's me and the New S&D - in fact the only time I've ever mentioned politics was when I damned the lot of them! But I have found in the past that when people accuse you of something they are often really talking about themselves. And as for 'wishful dreaming' - none of that nostalgic drivel will EVER get past me! This group has always been immersed in cold, hard, unsentimental economic reality, and hopefully always will be. It's funny when someone gets something totally wrong!

So I was left a little speechless when I read this. But then a later post started to give me a clue as to what this was all about. This was from somebody else.

There are some parts of the old S&DJR route that, without extraordinary amounts of money and some serious compulsory purchase orders, are unrecoverable. These are mainly the old routes and station sites that are within the larger towns.So while I applaud the aim of the group the reality is that the original road could never be restored in its entirety, and consideration would need to be given to 'bypass' such locations by constructing new route. I will hazard a guess that such new route building would be as just as expensive as trying to compulsory purchase the old route. The upshot of these costs is that the complete line itself could never earn them back as a profitable service in a millennia of Sundays, and as a community project the costs would simply be too high compared to providing replacement bus services.It's sad, but unfortunately true.

Ignore the initial teaching 'grandma to suck eggs' bit. It qualifies itself in any case and is only really repeating what we've always said. The New S&D, from day one, will be profitable. We have no intention of borrowing a penny to finance construction and shares won't pay a dividend except out of profit. As for talking about 'replacement bus services' this shows the writer hasn't even reached their Peak Oil Moment yet. Bus services using what fuel at what cost and on what useable roads? And how exactly are buses going to carry freight? Everyone has to have a sack of wood or cow sat on their lap? And a replacement for what? Cars?

'It's sad, but unfortunately true'. No, that's just your unthought out opinion. Get a bloody backbone man and stop thinking it's still the 70s!!

Oh dear, two of 'em!

And then, as a final treat, number one comes back with a riposte and suddenly everything becomes clear!

Too true, the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway is part of our archeological/historical heritage, that we should be proud of, and there it will stay, killed by the march of time, unfortunately some people need a serious reality check.

I'm not going to embarass the poster by naming him on this blog, as he's going to have to live this down in the future. But let's at least analyse this reply.

Straight away he's in with '[t]oo true'. Well, again, it's only an unthought out OPINION, not a fact. And then it all comes out ... heritage ... blah, blah, blah ... (portentiously) and there it will stay ... blah, blah, blah ... killed by the march of time ... blah, blah, blah, and then, as a final treat to us all another very revealing bit of self-analysis 'unfortunately some people need a serious reality check'!!!

Yes, it's called the Peak Oil Moment, when you suddenly clearly see that the way forward is rail, and that our comfortable cheap oil fuelled existence is drawing to its natural end! It'll come Backwards of Blandford, and then you'll join us as have many other doubters in the past!

So it all boils down to a rather selfish need to think of the old, destroyed S&D as 'theirs'. It's true that in the run up to closure and its aftermath old disused railways gain a strange patina of charm and decay. I know this because once it appealed to me. The old dinosaurs don't want us to tread on their memories and more importantly on their relics. They HATE the idea of modern freight and passenger trains running up and down the line. Sod the passengers, sod the companies that want their goods delivered quickly, cheaply and efficiently. They seriously think their memories, their patches of land 'where once ran a sabotaged and defeated railway' should remain unfettered by the infrastructure of the 21st century. They want to be free to live with their dreams and nostalgia, crying on a crumbling embankment as the years pass them by.

The sad thing is that we have ALLOWED for this. We want to rebuild the S&D as closely to the original, in terms of infrastructure, and preserve the relics that do remain, providing they are still economically viable. We're not really stamping on anyone's dream, surely just making them clearer and accessible to all?

I know the Lynton and Barnstaple had this problem as well. The dinosaurs need to understand that we also appreciate the heritage aspect of the S&D and will do everything to capture and preserve it. We can blend the modern era and the past, and both can benefit from each other.

I'm sorry if this is a little intense for some of you, but I think people out there need to know that we're not stupid, that we detest 'dreamers' and that we're here for the long haul. The S&D will return and probably a lot quicker than most of us realise. And a few dinosaurs are hardly going to stop us.

getting our act together





Two angles under the same heading.

First of all thanks to Andy Thompson again of RailTube who has taken on the task of bringing our IT services up to scratch. Not the website, which is in the very capable hands of David Bailey, but the blog, Facebook and Twitter.

He's created a general S&D Facebook page which already - in under two weeks - has 108 members! He's also created an S&D Twitter page which already has 83 followers!

It shows that there is huge support for the S&D out there, and that this support can be nurtured through all these internet channels.

It brings me on to my next point - the FIVE S&D groups, who all have the same aim, that is restoring and preserving the S&D, need to commit to combining, so that we can draw on far more resources and not keep reinventing the wheel. It seems that there has been some 'history' between groups, which as far as I'm concerned is nonsense. There's no room for egos or nastiness within a hundred miles of the S&D, it's not what we're about or have ever been about. The S&D was a friendly, family-orientated line, and as its successors we need to be the same.

I think this is where ordinary members should take the initiative. Join all the groups, then vote to make sure they do everything they can to make an easy transition to just one S&D group representing the whole route. The New S&D has this aim enshrined in its constitution, as members of the other groups we should ensure that they also adopt this as an aim. It will make the S&D stronger and trains between Bath and Bournemouth depart - and arrive - much sooner.

S&D developments





Yesterday's meeting at Blandford was superb. A very good turnout, great fun and a lot of ground covered. And two new people have joined the committee, which will strengthen us enormously.

Andy Thompson, who has created the hugely successful Steamtube site has agreed to begin contributing to this blog, and has also set up a New S&D Twitter account. This will be an ideal way to keep up with what's going on, and wil help build the S&D community.

I still feel that this blog needs more direct contributors, particularly from Midsomer Norton, Shillingstone, Gartell and Washford, who can keep our readers up to date with developments on site. You'll have full posting rights for both text and photographs. Please contact me to start posting!

At the meeting we spent some time discussing both Midford and Spetisbury. Both stations will be restored and will then act as information and sales points for the whole route. The stations will be restored to their peak BR glory and other buildings such as signalboxes etc will be rebuilt, to get a real railway atmosphere. Having had sight of the lease agreement at Midford between the current owner and Sustrans there is a codicil which requires Sustrans to move the cycleway from the trackbed and allow a single track railway to be reinstated. We will never bring in rolling stock or locos to Midford as a discrete restored station, but only when it is a part of a longer route (probably Radstock-Bath) - but track at Midford will be a real possibility to create the desired cosmetic effect.

Purchase of Midford proceeds apace, with paperwork (going back to 1895!) now in our hands.

2010 is going to be a fantastic year for the S&D!

Add in my lack of B12 (which will be corrected this Friday - ouch!) and the endless snow and I hope you can see why I've been a bit quiet!

going up a division!


Well the end result of yesterday's extraordinary blog visitation was 359 hits, well over double our previous record! We definitely seem to be picking up a gear as we head towards 2010. New members join up most days now, the new leaflets have arrived and we should soon be appearing regularly up and down the line with our sales and information stands. We now seem to pushing on an open door as one of many genuine rail restoration schemes in the UK, most of which are reversing the ridiculous Beeching cuts of the 1960s.

Rail is the future, not just for inter city connections, commuters and freight movements, but eventually for all industries, ports, farms and villages through a huge expansion in our tramway and light railway network.

swiss interval





We're off to Switzerland tomorrow for the Nuits des Fees in Leysin. If you feel that being a railway enthusiast is a bit socially isolating you're blaming the wrong thing! I discovered Leysin in the early 70s, it was on the end of a metre gauge line from Aigle where, incredibly, three narrow gauge lines started their journeys up into the mountains, all using street running in Aigle. Not a lot has changed in the last three decades although the AOMC no longer uses it's street running section having built a new line alongside the main line. A few years later I spent nearly a year there, both summer and winter, discovered skiing and also managed to visit just about every line in Switzerland. I still have friends from my Leysin days.

What Switzerland taught me is that railways can easily become the prime form of transport if it has the proper support within the country. Since my first visits new lines have been built throughout Switzerland, many employing extremely long tunnels. Nearly all lines are electrified, using hydro electricity so are well up in the sustainability rankings.

Leysin, a town about a fifth the size of Midsomer Norton, has FOUR stations and trains at least every hour.

So I'll be away for five days. I may be able to post when I'm away but don't count on it. But don't worry - this blog has been running for over three years and a delve into the archives should be very rewarding. Otherwise why not visit one of the S&D websites (on the sidebar)?

Who knows, I may even come back more fired up than ever!

two things for today





Buried in the message board and comments sections are views that Chilcompton station site should be secured ASAP for future S&D use.

This is really something that we should be getting our teeth into. I would perhaps suggest that this is the first solid thing the New S&D should do once it is launched - to raise the funds for this purchase.

Part of the site is currently occupied by Massey Wilcox, a transport company. Before you utter a big sigh, they do boast on their lorries that they are 'rail connected'. This shows they are forward thinking as rail is the future for all freight. I'm sure they would be amenable to also becoming rail-connected at Chilcompton!

Another idea that came to me today is that ALL members of the New S&D should have the right to post DIRECTLY to this blog. This would be openness and democracy in action! What do you think?

fantastic!





Today we've just hit 100 views of this blog - this is a fantastic result! Despite the Midsomer Norton Trust breaking their link to this site we are now getting about double the number of visits we did back when we did have the link.

Of course once I'd been told (by a regular blog reader) of this totally daft and self-harming action I went and created links to dozens of other websites (S&D and Peak Oil) so really they did me a favour.

It does look a bit daft that what most people consider to be the primary S&D restoration group doesn't even have a link to this unique S&D blog with its huge photo archive and (often) day to day record of MN activity but then I suppose the SDRHT website does it all so much better than I ever will ...

Despite the unfortunate loss of our mutual link to the Trust at Midsomer Norton, this blog has today seen a record number of hits (82). I must be doing something right!

Thanks for all your support - this blog will be going from strength to strength as the ideas for the New S&D begin to coalesce before our official opening on 6 March.
