Welcome to the 'New Somerset and Dorset Railway'

The original Somerset and Dorset Railway closed very controversially in 1966. It is time that decision, made in a very different world, was reversed. We now have many councillors, MPs, businesses and individuals living along the line supporting us. Even the Ministry of Transport supports our general aim. The New S&D was formed in 2009 with the aim of rebuilding as much of the route as possible, at the very least the main line from Bath (Britain's only World Heritage City) to Bournemouth (our premier seaside resort); as well as the branches to Wells, Glastonbury and Wimborne. We will achieve this through a mix of lobbying, trackbed purchase and restoration of sections of the route as they become economically viable. With Climate Change, road congestion, capacity constraints on the railways and now Peak Oil firmly on the agenda we are pushing against an open door. We already own Midford just south of Bath, and are restoring Spetisbury under license from DCC, but this is just the start. There are other established groups restoring stations and line at Midsomer Norton and Shillingstone, and the fabulous narrow gauge line near Templevcombe, the Gartell Railway.

There are now FIVE sites being actively restored on the S&D and this blog will follow what goes on at all of them!
Midford - Midsomer Norton - Gartell - Shillingstone - Spetisbury

Our Aim:

Our aim is to use a mix of lobbying, strategic track-bed purchase, fundraising and encouragement and support of groups already preserving sections of the route, as well as working with local and national government, local people, countryside groups and railway enthusiasts (of all types!) To restore sections of the route as they become viable.
Whilst the New S&D will primarily be a modern passenger and freight railway offering state of the art trains and services, we will also restore the infrastructure to the highest standards and encourage steam working and steam specials over all sections of the route, as well as work very closely with existing heritage lines established on the route.

This blog contains my personal views. Anything said here does not necessarily represent the aims or views of any of the groups currently restoring, preserving or operating trains over the Somerset and Dorset Railway!

get pedalling!

Now this is a GREAT idea!!

As we see cycle groups and railway groups begin to work more and more closely together this has got to be one of the best and biggest bike/rail events of 2012!

Sunday, August 4, 2013 at 12:00pm until Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 12:00pm
  • Where
           Bath to Bournemouth

  • Description
A two week Trip of a similar means to the Southwest Coast Path. Except the whole 114 miles will be done
    A: On bike
    B: In one go

The idea is to traverse the whole former 'Somerset And Dorset Joint Railway' and raise money for your chosen Heritage Railway or Loco. It is an... open thing so you do not have to be invited; Nor be with the main group for the whole journey.
It will take around two weeks to complete including rest days and branch lines. As before; you will not have to do the whole trip. Good Luck!

    volunteer weekend

This year's Midsummer Event (23 and 24 June) is going to be focussing on volunteering as well as offering all our usual attractions. We've just completed a new leaflet dedicated to volunteering opportunities on the line which will be launched over the weekend. There will also be displays on a voluteering theme. Saturday evening we'll be having our first barbecue on the patio from 6pm. There will of course be music!

    party time

A first for the S&D at Midsomer Norton was our kids' party today in the coach and on the patio. If you want to give your children a unique birthday experience why not book the coach? Prices start from just £30 for 2 hours. Contact Debs for details.

Everyone today was out on the patio as it was so hot!

Birthday boy Wulfric rips into a present.

A real treat for the children was the disco equipment which they all had a go on, including Sam, 5.

Some of the ingredients in today's special - S&D ploughmans lunch ...

A surprise visit from the King and Queen of Thailand - we needed to find our best crockery to keep them docile.

    midsomer miscellany

The brake coach is now fully converted for push-pull working.

A 'special' for our easter weekend event - an S&D ploughmans lunch for just £4!

The tombola was a huge success with an empty table by 2pm - except for a forlorn copy of 'Jinty'.

Our first disco - though due to the time and occasion it was more like background music. Catering manager Debs slips into her more usual role as a top DJ.

    patio progress

With the warmer weather it's now time to get the patio tables up outside the catering coach so we can cope with the huge numbers of visitors we expect this summer. This really will be an excellent spot for a snack, meal or event, with a blend of railway ambience, landscaped gardens and a chill-out atmosphere. We're having a grand opening of the patio on Easter Sunday, 8 April 2007, from 1 till 4 with food and drink, and music provided by DJs Brassey Digger and DJ Trin.

And with meals starting at just £2.50 who could resist it? The coach is also open every Sunday and Monday offering a full menu.

    family history weekend

A new venture for us was the Family History Weekend at Midsomer Norton. Unfortunately Lady Angela was out of action on the Saturday due to the driver attending a funeral, but everything else was up and running. There was a nice steady stream of visitors and we were kept busy as usual!

The down platform was the ideal spot for the stalls.

    open day - part two

    The signalbox is almost there!

Lady Angela makes her last trip of the day back down to the goods/engine shed.

Drivers etc mill around the engine.

Young Jeff, cosmetically blackened for the camera, makes his way to the engine after a call from Jeff Akers.

Despite the oppresive heat today was even more successful than yesterday, with loads of new members joining, plenty of cash through the tills and a wonderful atmosphere throughout. Posted by Picasa

    open day - part 1

Lady Angela slumbers in the station ....

    Crowds surround Lady Angela.

From the southern observation area there is an excellent view over the station. Lady Angela and Queen Mary brake van form a members' only train.

View from the cab of the Queen Mary as we pull out of Midsomer Norton South.

All in all a very successful day at the station, with almost perfect weather as always. Sunday should be even busier, with Driver for a Fiver trains from 11 in the morning.

See you there ... Posted by Picasa

The weather is set fair - hot and sunny! Don't struggle with traffic, overheating radiators and tetchy kids on a car trip to a crowded beach - cool off at Midsomer Norton, nestling high in the foothills of the Mendips, cooling breezes (almost) guaranteed! Posted by Picasa
