we are not alone
The S&D isn't the only 'lost' route which has an organisation supporting its rebuilding and reopening. In fact there are many such schemes around the UK, which is both comforting but also a possible problem for the future as many groups, given new energy by the energy crisis, compete for resources!
Far enough away not to be a threat is the scheme to rebuild the Penrith to Keswick line. This was an extraordinary closure, coming as late as 1972, and depriving the heart of the Lake District of modern transport. The roads have never been able to cope, and probably never will, except for their last few years of existence!
They have spent many years polishing their scheme and they have an excellent website here.
